Clabrough & Johnstone best 20 bore sidelock
Estimated c1925/1930 this gun, numbered 102258, is mentioned in Nigel Brown’s “British Gunmakers Vol. 3” as being, probably, one of the last guns ever made by C & J. It is certainly of the highest quality by this quite prolific yet not so well known maker. With strong connections to the USA during the 19th century C & J built up a strong worldwide following. there is an interesting history about the firm in the book “Birmingham Gunmakers” by Douglas Tate, the chapter referring mainly to J.P.Clabrough Gunmaker. A partnership was later struck up with Johnstone and sadly, the firm ceased trading during the depression in England during the 1930’s.
This gun is in remarkably good condition and has a very pleasing natural patina. it retains around 30% of its original colour hardening and the fin rose and scroll engraving is still crisp and was well executed by a very good engraver. the barrels measure well and have original Birmingham proof marks. the marks are post 1925 and show the bore size to be 20g when made.
The engraving is very crisp rose and scroll with an attractive name panel on the sidelocks. The engraver is not named but he was without doubt a very skilled craftsman. The guncase is a lightweight leather tapered compact with limited room for cleaning kit, of which there are basic cleaning tools and rod. Internal lining was new about ten years ago and is in green best wool baize.
