El libro de Purdey lo explica bien:
The Arrival of A, B, C, D and E Quality.
In the late 1870s, Purdey made an entirely new departure from their normal standard of gunmaking by introducing differing grades of guns at different qualities and at different prices. From this period, Purdey guns would be on sale from the best grade A, to the cheapest grade E. These graded guns were sold from the late 1870s right through the 1890s, tailing off before World War I, never to reappear again after the war. The 1880s saw the greatest amount being constructed.
The grades can be summarised as follows:
Grade A - Best Gun
Finest work and finish throughout — Hammer £56,
Hammerless £58. 10s.
Grade B - Approaching a Best Gun
Hammer £40. 10s. od, Hammerless £45. os. od.
Grade C - Central-Fire Double Gun
Hammer £32. 8s. od, Hammerless (Boxlock) £35. 15s. od.
Grade D - Central-Fire Double Gun
Hammer £25. 13s. od, Hammerless (Boxlock) £26. 10s. od.
Grade E - Central-Fire Double Gun
Hammer £20. 14s, Hammerless (Boxlock) £22. os. od.
Customers could choose in all types either a top lever or under lever. In the hammerless guns, C, D and E quality were boxlocks and in the hammer guns, E quality were primarily made with back-action locks. Rifles likewise were made in various qualities. The grade A guns were still entirely built by Purdey to the highest standards. The other grades of gun were not built by Purdey.
Depending upon the grade, Purdey would finish and engrave the guns to a greater or lesser extent.
The principal makers of the lower grade guns were:
W. & C. Scott, Birmingham. They were the major makers of the guns, no doubt due to the working business relationship Purdey had with them.
