6, Holland & Holland 12 Bore Thomas Perkes Push Forward Underlever Opening Self-Cocking Back Action Hammer Gun Built about 1877 with a Treble-Grip (Triple Snap Bolt or Triple Bite) Action. This Holland & Holland is a Thomas Perkes Action from Patent #129 of 1876 by Perkes. The hammers are brought to full-cock with the push forward underlever by a T shaped bar that rises from the bottom of the standing breech and engages both hammers. The gun is unique and of historical interest in the period from 1871 to 1890 when the sporting gun progressed from hammer to hammerless. This H&H then found a new but modern life when W.R. Leeson, Ashford, Kent added a new set of 28" Siemen's Steel barrels that now are modern proved at 3 tons per square inch. William Richard Leeson installed these steel barrels a long time ago but was still in business in London up to 1933. They are .737" with 6 each Teague screw in chokes, 2 1/2" chambers, Wall thickness on the right barrel at .0315" and .029" on the left, Splinter forend with a forward facing lever at the end of the forend with a finger grip that is pulled down to release the forend, A straight hand stock at 14 7/8 x 1 1/2 x 2 1/4" over a modern 7/8" leather pad with plugs to be easily removed or replaced, Very slight cast-off for the right hand, Great game gun weight at 6 lbs. 13 oz., Both the buttstock and forend wood remain very solid and stout for a lot of extended shooting, The wood has excellent color and contrast with deep black and brown color with excellent finish with the checkering sharp and crisp, 80% coverage of very nice scroll engraving that is still sharp and clean cut, The piece is cased in a leather trunk with a H&H trade label, The case is a vintage trunk that was completely redone by Marvin Huey with high quality accessories added. This is history with the advantage of speed of a self-cocking hammer gun; it has pure style, grace, handling characteristics and carries the name of one of the greatest sporting gun makers of the British trade. The resurgence of interest in the hammer gun stirred the souls at Famars and to this day they build a true self-cocking hammer gun called the "Castore". This is neat 12 Bore hammer sporting that has a lot of life left for many years of fun field shooting. /////////////////////////// Beyond the mechanics of the self-opener is the triple bite action. It is of historical interest as well, the locking bolts work in opposite directions. The barrel lugs remind you of a screw-grip, on closing the Purdey style sliding bolt has the forward bolt going forward and the rear bolt goes in the opposite direction. The rear lug below the standing breech moves forward and bites into the back of the rear barrel lug, hence the Triple Bite Action. I believe I am correct that this is Patent #2530 of 1874 by none other than Mr. Thomas Perkes. /////////////////////////// Mr. Thomas Perkes didn't just fool around with guns to have something to shoot. He was an inventor of the first rank and also made many very important contributions to the evolution of the ejector mechanism. He held 8 patents; some are milestones in the evolution of very significant features that brought the sporting gun into the 20th Century. On the 5th of November of 1922 he passed away and left an estate valued at less than 100 British pounds. We gun cranks didn't learn a lot about becoming wealthy in the balance of the last century, I just hope Mr. Perkes had as much fun as we did.
